At the Ventspils Open-Air Museum of Maritime Fishing you can see the fishmen houses, fishing boats and tools.
Ventspils lies in the northwest of Latvia where the Venta River falls into the Baltic Sea. Ventspils is one of the oldest cities of Latvia. The Castle of the Livonian Order, first mentioned in historical documents of 1290, is considered to be the first building in the present territory of Ventspils. Near the castle, that was built in an economically and strategically important place, the camp of the German colonists and later the city of Ventspils gradually formed. Ventspils has been developed as a trading port. You can see the Castle of the Livonian Order, built in the second part of the 13th century, it is the most ancient building on the present territory of Ventspils. Now there is located Ventspils museum. The beautiful, clean beach and surrounding forests are perfect for relaxation. At the Ventspils Open-Air Museum of Maritime Fishing you can see the fishmen houses, fishing boats and tools. There is also a windmill and a narrow gauge railway span in the territory of the museum. The development of the exhibition of the Ventspils Maritime Open-Air Museum started in 1959. The boat "Hercogs Jekabs" will take you down the Venta River up to the mouth of the river.
