Matsalu Nature Reserve
29. may 2003
In the West Estonia there are 11 nature reserves, the best-known is Matsalu - as a birds paradise.
The reserve is located in the Western coast of Estonia. It was founded in 1957 and covers 48 640 ha of land. When birds die and go to heaven, they probably end up in Matsalu, for this is truly a bird's (and birder's) paradise. Matsalu Nature Reserve, which has been recognised to be of international importance, is comprised of the Matsalu Bay and the surrounding islets, reed beds, coastal, flood plain and wooded meadows. When looking out from one of the constructed bird observatory towers, it may appear as if the fields themselves are taking off when the resting and feeding birds take flight. All together, some 270 species of birds have been recorded here.
