On Estonia`s western coast is beautiful town of Haapsalu. The town is located on a penninsula surrounded by the sea,and is a place where people have come to spend their summer holidays for the last 200 years.
The history of Haapsalu goes back to the 13th of century, when it became the centre of the diocese of West Estonia and the islands. It received its town charter in 1279. By that time the central part of the Episcopal castle, the so-called small castle, and the Dome Church were completed. Haapsalu was almost destroyed during the Livonian War. Since 1825 Haapsalu has been considered as a resort. The major sights in the town are the Episcopal Castle (1265) and the Dome Church that is the largest one-nave church in the Baltic countries. There is a legend that on a moonlight night in August one can see a lady’s figure in one window of the baptistery. This ghost is the so-called White Lady of Haapsalu. The Old Town’s wooden buildings are under protection as architectural monuments.
